2016: The year of natural health?

A few years ago natural health was out in the long grass of healthcare. The science is now inescapable. Diet, lifestyle and natural products affect the expression of our genes, the ultimate reflection of our health status, more than anything created in a test tube. So, getting on-board with natural health is a necessity if we’re to deal with the raft of chronic diseases and mental health issues that plague modern society.

Not everyone calls it natural health, of course. It goes by a variety of names, from lifestyle medicine, integrated or functional medicine, to various systems of traditional medicine through to a host of modalities under the ‘complementary and alternative medicine’ (CAM) umbrella.

Sadly, how most people choose to manage their health has little to do with the actual science. It has a lot more to do with politics, economics and a legal infrastructure that regulates both the healthcare profession and those that produce, market and sell products intended for healthcare purposes. And frankly, sorting out the distortions that have occurred as a result of pressure from transnational corporations is the biggest single challenge we face in our mission to facilitate ever increasing levels of adoption of natural health.

For 2016 – we need to work more cohesively as grassroots communities to make change. To kick off our year, we look this week at some of the challenges facing our society’s approach to mental health and the pressure on many home owners to fit smart meters. In both these cases, we can do a lot to wrestle back control. We don’t need to just pop pills to remedy depression and anxiety, now the biggest burden on healthcare systems worldwide. We also can say ‘no’ to smart meters. But only if know what else we can do and in what ways the approaches offered to us by the establishment might be harmful or ineffective.

We can control our destiny to a much greater degree than many people think.   Let 2016 be the year when the grassroots movement recognises it is empowered to make change – through informed choice and political pressure.

From all of us at ANH-Intl, we hope the New Year brings new ideas and unprecedented aspirations that can help inspire ever-greater adoption of natural health
