Vitamin D, healthy carbs and more

Here’s hoping this end of summer newsletter finds you in great shape. If like me, you’ve had the benefit of a short break in the sun, you might put any concerns about your vitamin D levels on the backburner. Don’t! Now’s the time to act – and you’ll see why in our lead article.

We’ve also pulled together the next in our series of online recipe ebooks – this one focusing on getting a greater diversity of plants into your diet. Eating more plants can be good – but not always, especially if they contain compounds that you’re sensitive to (such as gluten and lectins) or they don’t supply enough of the compounds that are good for you (such as anthocyanins, other flavonoids, sulforaphane and resveratrol). Those who’ve gone low carb are also often eating fewer plant foods, being concerned about plants as carb sources. Well, while you might want to limit your starchy veg, there’s a huge array of above-ground plants out there that are your friends. Happy food prep!

In our weekly news, we report on the link between optimism and longevity, exposés about polypharmacy and the revolving doors of Big Pharma, misleading information about smartphone radiation emissions, the conviction of the world’s biggest drug company and opioid kingpin, and the launch of extinction-preventing Cambodian rice on the UK market.

In health, sustainably, democratically (my only nod to the crazy politics that surrounds us!) and naturally, of course…
