A recent Cochrane review of 29 trials, covering 5489 patients, concluded that the St John’s Wort extracts tested "...are superior to placebo in patients with major depression". No wonder this innocent herb has been banned as a food supplement in some EU Member States. It is quite clearly too effective for its own good!

Poland has recently established a government-backed panel to develop the criteria needed to classify a range of nutrients into two groups to be dealt with under either food or medicines law. And Belgium states it will be reclassifying botanicals such as echinacea and gingko as medicinal.

The EU Novel Foods Regulations (1997), initially brought into force as a protection against GM foods entering the market without sufficient safety testing, is now being used as the tool with which superfoods from indigenous cultures are being discriminated against within the EU. Today's story in The Times (UK) tells how Goji berries, a completely natural nutrient dense superberry eaten for centuries in China and other parts of Asia, is due to be removed from the shelves on 23rd March 2007, if proof of sale in any EU Member State before 1997 cannot be shown.
