Week No 23 | 06/06/2019

Pain, stress and addiction

The three conditions mentioned in this week’s title of our Heartbeat newsletter may trigger a response in you, and that’s unlikely to be a smile on your face. But they are all symptomatic of where 21st century society has got to – these conditions affecting over half the adult population at one time or another.

None of them have any silver bullet cures courtesy of pharma – and most primary care doctors aren’t adequately trained to help people with these conditions. In fact, America in particular, is amidst an opioid crisis that in turn hijacks our brains’ age-old reward system, so triggering an epidemic of addiction.

We do have some good news though. Some of the world’s foremost experts in these fields came together in San Antonio, Texas, to help deliver the most up-to-date, clinically-relevant information to the 1600 or so of us who gathered for the Institute for Functional Medicine’s Annual International Conference. Drugs barely even featured except where they were the cause of problems.

You’ll find my highlights and take-home piece with some interesting video inserts – these are really worth a watch. Meleni has also contributed a piece, based on the award-winning poster, by UK practitioner, friend and colleague, Leonie Ash, that deals with ways of unlocking childhood trauma.

In our news alerts, more evidence on the importance of life purpose, UK GP clinic closures, another nail in the statin coffin linked to diabetic neuropathy, and why we might wish to ponder the importance of mosquitoes in natural ecosystems before we try to exterminate them all with GM technology.

In health, naturally and sustainably
