Rob Verkerk PhD, is an internationally acclaimed, multi-disciplinary sustainability scientist with a 35-year background in environmental, agricultural, food, nutritional and health sciences. He will be presenting on Day 2 of the conference in the technical stream.

His presentation Accuracy and transparency in food and beverage labelling: reality check will take place on the 19th March at 11:20am. It will cover the following areas….

  • Overview of hidden and grey areas: processing effects, artificial colours, flavours and sweeteners, contaminants and provenance
  • More detailed insights into each, using examples, viz: processing effects on health (e.g. mechanically refined wholegrain cereals), natural flavours that are not naturally-derived, carriers for flavours that do not need to be disclosed, common contaminants that are known carcinogens (e.g. PAHs, heterocyclic amines, acrylamide), and multi-ingredient products in which ingredients are sourced in different countries from the country of manufacture.
  • How socially and environmentally responsible companies in the food industry can take a lead, go beyond the minimum legal requirements, and set standards that less scrupulous actors are forced to follow.
